I have divided the site in some categories though they are not mutually exclusive. Controversy always attracts attention. It can be ethical, political, medical etc. These issues can be seen as transitional i.e. a fashion or a fad.
If you are targeting a fashion or a fad, timing is everything. You need to collect your profit during peak interest and be prepared to get out of the game as it starts to wane.
You may follow trends and predict that the upward trend will continue and therefore invest in that topic. Alternatively if you feel that one topic has peaked or you are too late to invest, you can look at related topics that might be predicted to peak later.
Commercial products and new technologies provide many opportunities. While product names may be off limits due to copyright or trade mark issues, you can register domain names covering categories or generic names. Products can be fads e.g. tickle me Elmo or they can be here to stay e.g. digital cameras.
Everyone probably has their own favorite research techniques. These can include newspapers, magazines, trade journals, company pipelines, search volume trends, demographics etc.
