Analysing trends using Google Labs trends tool

by Barry on September 9, 2007

Trend Analysis

The google labs trend tool is useful to see past and current trends. You can see if interest is rising or declining in a particular topic or product. Cyclical trends can also be spotted.

Seasonal trends

For example, entering “digital cameras” gives you a search volume trend that gives a spike towards the end of each year. This is probably because people are searching for gifts for Christmas at this time. A similar spike is seen searching with “PC”.

Fads

A good example of a fad was the tickle me Elmo. If you enter “elmo”, you can see a huge spike when it was released and continuing up to Christmas.

What’s hot

Environmental topics are becoming more popular over time. Searching for “carbon footprint” gives you a good example of the continuing rise of interest.

The regional information given below the graphs is also useful for geotargeting your potential domain names.

You can find the link to Google trends tool in the tools section. Give a go and let me know what you think. Find any interesting trends?
