I was thinking about the future of computing and what might be mined in that area. The journal Nature dedicated an issue to computing in 2020 so I went hunting in those articles.
Quantum Computing
“In conventional, or classical, computers, information is stored as strings of bits: binary digits each of which can take the value of 0 or 1. The same is true for quantum computers, except that this time the binary digits — ‘qubits’ — are stored in the quantum states of microscopic systems, such as the electronic state of an atom or ion.”
Qubits is an interesting term but someone has already grabbed it along with quantumcomputing. Anyway quantum computing is predicted to be a niche industry and not reaching out to the mass market.
Ion-trap computing
“Much of the current effort is focused on making quantum computers using atoms or ions that are held in a trap. In an ion-trap computer, the qubits are encoded in the electronic states of ions that are confined by an electromagnetic field. “
Ion-trap and ion-trapcomputer are open. Are these likely to become mainstream terms? In my view, probably not. Quantum computers may well be confined to being research machines but if you think differently then this might be an opportunity.
Quantum dots
“Others hope to create optical quantum computers, encoding qubits into the quantum states of photons, or to make qubits from tiny specks of semiconducting material called quantum dots.”
Quantumdots and quantum-dots are taken but quantumdotcomputing is not. Want to make a bet on this technology?
Computing in the field
Another idea has been that computing should go from the desktop to the field. Networks of minature computers acting as sensors could collect data in real time right in the field. These minaturized computers have been termed “motes”, “nodes” or “pods”. These “sensor networks” could become so small that they could be embedded in our environment. This is sometimes termed “smartdust” Remember I mentioned words in quotes might be interesting? Well start exploring.
Brain Control
I wandered over to Fortune magazine for another article on the future of computing. Here they discuss the use of electrical patterns in the brain being used to input into computers and data being outputed directly into the brain. Sounds far-fetched? Well already quadriplegics are controling the cursor on a computer screen with their brains. A Sony patent from 2005 describes using ultrasound to stimulate the brain and to be used as a way to control computer games.
What about domain names that describe these technologies? Games may become “fully immersive” where the player feels like they are “in the game”. This is a technology that is already starting to happen with feedback systems on controls such as WII or feedback joysticks.
Ok, that should inspire you to search through the many buzz words describing the future of computing and place bets on your favorite technology by getting domain names that describe that area. Have fun.
