Disease testing trends and website names

by Barry on October 20, 2007

As our population ages and medical science finds genes that predict susceptibility to disease, genetic tests are becoming more popular. Try “genetic test” in the Google labs trends tool and see how the search volume has increased over the last couple of years. One can think of website names like SkinCancerTest.co.uk, BreastCancerRisk.co.uk, CancerTesting.co.uk, SkinCancerRisk.com. These are examples of some domain names that are available as of writing.

Testing now has developed to the point where groups of genes as opposed to a single genes can be examined. The pattern or “fingerprint” of those genes determines the risk of developing the disease. Terms like DNA fingerprinting or genetic fingerprint have been used for these techniques. Many of the .com website names are already taken in this area but you can use prefixing to get a novel domain name. I will discuss prefixing next time.

Biomarkers are an important area where medical science is making great advances. Biomarkers are biochemical tests that mark the progress of a disease or the effects of treatment or can identify the patients to treat with a particular drug. Again enter “biomarker” in Google labs trends tool and you will see recent search activity. HeartDiseaseBiomarker.com, Biomarker.co.uk, SkinCancerBiomarker.com are examples that are available.

With genetic testing comes a flood of complex information that provides the statistical chances of developing disease. A genetic test without any treatment option can lead to rash and drastic decisions. The genetic breast cancer test for Brca1 and Brca2 had led women to have both breasts removed even though there is no guarantee they would develop breast cancer. Genetic counseling is now needed to help patients make interpretations and decisions on the results of testing. Again have a look at “genetic counseling” on Google trends tool. GeneticTestingAdvice.com is available but many others are taken.

This is a fast moving area and many diagnostic companies, hospitals and academics are heavily involved in applied research. Insurance companies will also be involved in determining which tests to pay for. There are ethical issues and issues of privacy which will all make this area publically visible. Good luck in finding website names in this area. As always buyer beware.
