Google moves into consumer health

by Barry on February 22, 2008

So in my last post, I mentioned one of the early applications of the semantic web would be health-care. Today I see a report in the NY Times that Google is developing applications for health records.

The Cleveland Clinic sees value in this because many of its patients are elderly and spend significant time in other states e.g. Florida. Many are taking multiple medications and have to remember to report all changes in medications to each doctor in each location they visit.

Microsoft has already lined up the New York-Presbyterian Hospital and the Mayo Clinic, two big names for its offering. Other smaller companies are also moving into this area.

I pointed out some other benefits from consumer medical history records including spotting hereditary disease and implementing monitoring or prevention strategies. With Google and Microsoft involved, this area has to expand. My investment in FamilyHealthMap.com doesn’t seem too bad and will not be my only investment.
