Press releases are freely available from many companies promoting their services and products. Rather than going from company to company to browse press releases, there are websites that list these and categorize them.
Why Press releases?
- They reflect whats popular or becoming popular.
- They are commercial
- They reflect generic trends
- There is already free promotion going on
One such site is PRWeb.com. Time to look for inspiration from whats hot in press releases.
On the homepage is a list of the latest top rated press releases. One title was “Travel Videographer Shares Secrets of Getting Paid to Film Holidays “. With the popularity of digital camcorders, user generated travel videos could be an interesting niche. I tried TravelVideos and VideoTravels and the following were available:
- Videotravels.Biz
- Videotravels.Mobi
- Videotravels.Us
- Videotravels.Net
- Videotravels.Co.Uk
- Videotravels.Info
I am sure there are more possibilities with some thought.
Pharmaceuticals in drinking water
“IBWA Position Statement: Measures Used to Produce and Process Bottled Water are Effective in Protecting from Pharmaceutical Contamination”
Recent news stories on pharmaceutical contamination of drinking water has opened up a new market for water testing. Basically with large population centers depending on reclaimed water, some medications are not being broken down or removed and end up back in the drinking water. Generic terms in this area are worth looking at.
“Boom In Safe High-End Baby Products”
Obvious commercial interest. Parents are demanding safer toys and baby products. In the past the concern was about allergens and being all natural, now it is about safety. Generic terms here should be interesting and good potential for development.
Oil Tank Inspection
“Envirotech Of Fairfield County Inc. Celebrates 15 years of Oil Tank Removal Services Envirotech of Fairfield County Inc. offers Oil Tank Inspection, repairing , removals, removes contaminated soil, Lead Paint inspection, testing, abatement, Mold & Asbestos testing along with abatement and Vacuum Truck Services.”
A huge business already with many home and land owners liable for contamination problems and required to test before selling. The obvious .coms are already taken but being inventive here may provide you with a domain that you can market or develop.
Alternative Fuel Boilers
“Econoburn™ wood gasification boilers have grown steadily since Dunkirk, NY-headquartered Alternative Fuel Boilers, LLC shipped its first unit early last year,”
Alternative fuel is a major area of commercial activity. AlternativeFuelBoilers.Co.Uk is still available for those over in Britain but the rest are taken. Again watch out for anything generic with alternative fuels.
Homemade Pet Food
“New Homemade Dog Food And Cat Food Cookbook Combination Released Families with both dogs and cats can now purchase a two digital cookbook combination with both meals and treats created by a concerned pet owner in response to the devastating pet deaths caused by pet food poisoning last year”
I have talked about food safety in the past. Here is a niche opportunity being commercially exploited. See what happened to search volume for “pet food” at the end of 2007 when safety became a high priority issue: Pet Food Search Volume
Top Sales Spot
“Jets.com Names Anthony P. Tivnan Executive Vice President of Sales Private Jet Industry Leader Promotes Tivnan to Top Sales Spot”
TopSalesSpot.Com is available. The two adjacent “s” are not ideal but using capitalization, it can be resolved. Sales is a highly competitive area and who doesn’t want to hold the Top Sales Spot?
The bottom line
Press releases are another source of domain name inspiration. They can point you to hot commercial areas. You are leveraging these companies product research to find generic terms to cover that area.
- Take your time
- Make sure the domain name you want can be marketed or developed or attract type-in traffic
- Be aware of trademark terms and avoid them
- Do not use press releases as your sole research tool

Wow, these are great ideas. I have a few other methods i use to try to spot trends, but had never thought of the press releases….
You have to sift through the press releases carefully but it can really work to inspire you. You still need to do the research to make sure the domain is worthwhile.
