Trade Magazines for domain name ideas

by Barry on March 21, 2008

OK, I decided to venture into the wild world of trade magazines to see what inspiration is available there.

I decided to drill my way down into an industry I am not familiar with and see if i could mine any domain name nuggets. Besides finding lots of bad puns, I also came across a trade publication called Rock Products

Skimming through their March 1st issue, a variety of interesting terms caught my eye including

  • RockDrilling
  • RockDrills
  • RockBlasting
  • RockProducts
  • MetalFumeFever

The domain name for the last one was available. Metal Fume Fever is the name for an illness that is caused primarily by exposure to zinc oxide fume (ZnO) in the workplace. The main cause of this exposure is usually breathing the fumes from welding, cutting, or brazing on galvanized metal. Interesting but patients tend to recover on their own. So it is not the lawyer’s paradise that silicosis is. Still further research might be warranted.

I noticed an ad for their industry’s big convention called ConExpo and looked at their Innovation & Solutions Center

On that page I found the information below just littered with interesting terms.

Green Solutions – hydraulic hybrids (passenger vehicles and system technologies), renewable energy, Tier 4, and environmentally-friendly fluids. Motion Control Solutions Now and in the Future – electro-hydraulics and motion control for mobile equipment hydraulics.
Fluid Power Solutions – mobile hydraulics, hydraulic fluids, hydraulic braking and steering solutions, hose routing, seal designs, contamination control, and the future of fluid power. Innovative Applications in the Entertainment Industry – amazing applications of pneumatic, hydraulic and electronic technologies in theme parks, movies and live production shows.

I picked out those terms and ran them through Moniker.com in batch mode

  • SmallFleetManagement
  • SteeringSolutions
  • HydraulicBraking
  • HydraulicHybrids
  • HydraulicFluids
  • MobileHydraulics
  • SealDesigns
  • ContaminationControl
  • FluidPower
  • Electro-Hydraulics
  • MotionControl
  • MobileEquipment
  • PneumaticSolutions
  • HydraulicSolutions
  • ConveyorDrives
  • MotorizedPulleys

Those in green are available but I hadn’t expected that so many of these would be taken. With the importance of maintenance and fuel efficiency, fleet management especially for smaller fleets is very important. They are faced with rising fuel prices and many are looking at hybrids. Plenty of advertising material there.

A quick search for “hydraulic braking” on Google yields ads on the right hand side of the page. This should be a commercial area. Interestingly enough a search for “hydraulic brakes” gives only two ads on the search page but more Google results.

Also if I compare “braking” to “brakes” on Google Trends, “brakes” is a more popular search term.

So my quick venture into trade magazines was quite interesting. It produced a lot of good terms though many are already taken probably because they are such commercial terms. It looks like there are gaps to fill though and advertising to match.

So while I don’t want to make a mountain out of a molehill, I think trade magazines may be a diamond in the rough.

I find all kinds of trade magazines at the gym that I go to. Usually slip 1 or 2 in my bag every day. Never thought I’d be so invested/interested in photovoltaics or invivorobotics. =)

Great post!

I hadn’t thought of the gym as a source of the magazines. I have done a bit of research in the waiting room at the doctors or the dentist. I look for the more offbeat magazines like those architectural ones. I pay attention to the ads they run also because they can turn up an interesting term to research.
