Malware hidden in ad streams

by Barry on March 25, 2008

I have noticed some sites are being affected by a malware ad hidden in their ad stream. It triggers sporadically and often not for several hours making it difficult to track down. If you see this behavior in your ad stream, you should report it.

This was reported back in Nov, 07 but appears to be continuing on some ad streams.

“The malware is apparently being disguised as a Flash file that has a redirect function encrypted in the file, so that when publishers upload the ad file the malware is not detectable. Once deployed on a site, the Flash file launches the malicious redirects, perhaps triggered at certain times or in certain locations.”

Here is an example I came across today. It is annoying users and publishers alike and giving sites a bad reputation. I have not seen any reports of this occurring on parking pages but it may be only a matter of time before they slip through.
