Media Relations and Predictive Domaining

by Barry on October 30, 2008

I decided to stop by the CalTech website to see if there were any future technologies that might inspire a domain name or two. These days as I have noted before, universities have media relations with press releases online. They can be a fertile ground for predictive domaining.

Energy Dependence domain

The first one that caught my eye was “Woolsey Speaks on Energy Independence”. Since EnergyIndependence didn’t yield a good domain, I tried EnergyDependence. The .com is taken but up for sale. The .net and .org are available and may not be a bad investment given the dependence on imported oil and gas of most developed countries. Energy needs are only increasing all around the world.

Data Transport domain

The next title I noticed was “Industry and Research Heavyweights Collaborate to Demonstrate Data Transport Capability at SC07 “. DataTransport sounds interesting. The .com is taken and has a website. The .net is taken but nothing there and the .org is available.

I am not comfortable with the .org extension with this name but the .net sounds perfect. If the owner isn’t using it and would part with it for a reasonable price, there might be some potential. Certainly data transport is a major industry. The security of that data in transit is also of great concern to companies and individuals.

Data theft in transit

Below is quoted from a story in the Portland Press Herald from back in March regarding the Hannaford data theft.

“To me, this is the first publicized case of a new trend in data stolen in transit,” said Avivah Litan, vice president and security analyst for Gartner Inc., a technology research group with headquarters in Stamford, Conn.

“I think we’re going to see a lot more of this in 2008 and 2009,” Litan said. “Up until now, Visa has been working really hard to drive sensitive authentication out of data storage, and they’ve been largely successful. But that means that criminals have to turn to stealing data in transit.”

Sounds like a prediction to me!

Interesting. The new tax certainly is an opportunity. You could think of many uses for energy domains that help increase the number of potential buyers. Develop to generate traffic and attract more buyers. Topics could be energy industry, energy policy, new energy technology, green technology, industrial energy savings, family energy conservation, energy projects and so on. You could use news feeds selecting relevant topics.
