Marketing domains to doctors, dentists and others

by Barry on December 5, 2008

Doctors, dentists and others in such high income brackets are highly desired clients of domainers looking to sell profession related domains. So what can you do to grab their interest and show them the value of having a domain?

General characteristics of these professionals

  • Such professionals are busy and time is money to them
  • They want it done now
  • They want to see results
  • They need to project a certain image

Thinking about this may lead you to think about how to market to these professionals.

What do they want?

They want their website to be a projection of their business so it should be of high quality and professional looking with a clean design. Their focus will be on the final website and how it looks and works.

Selling domain names

In my experience, it is tough to sell the domain name by itself. You can try the prestige angle. “You will be THE Peoplesville dentist with PeoplesvilleDentist.com” for example. It can work from time to time.

The far easier way to sell a domain is to sell the website along with the domain. If you have the skills and experience, then you can do this yourself but make sure you really can deliver a high quality website in the agreed time-frame.

Partnering

You can also partner with a website development company. There are two ways to do this.

  1. you can approach as website development company and sell them on the idea that you can provide quality domain names for their clients and let them do the marketing for you.
  2. you can find clients yourself and recommend a website developer. If you are smart, you can arrange with the website developer to get a cut of the development deal also.

This sort of arrangement is often found in the wedding business. A photographer with a client may recommend a particular videographer saying that they know the quality of that person’s work and that they have worked well together in the past.

This sort of cross-selling/referral business can bring in significant extra money and result in more sales completed on the domain names.

Using different business models

To generalize, you should look around and see what business models other businesses use to market to the same type of clients outside the Internet and see if you can adapt them to your purposes.

Ask yourself what other services your client may need and either refer them or try to bundle the services into a package and sell that.

Definitely selling geo specific generic domains to the medical community, is profitable. But I advise every domainer to first make a phone call to find out the appropriate person to talk to. Otherwise, you’ll be writing and sending out email pitches to webmasters and people who the medical companies hire to handle their online business development, but don’t care one way or another if their client nabs a category killer domain.

Find out the name of someone inside the medical organization that handles marketing, then send them your pitch.

Great point Stephen. In any marketing effort, you should know who to direct your presentation to. Idea for another post, I think. Thanks

This is exactly what I was hoping to read, thank you for the post Stephen. It’s great you mention the fact that creating a strategic alliance with a development company is a viable option, most of the domainers are hesitant to remove them from parking and wait 5 days for a site to be developed.

If anyone has Geo Specific dot coms and would like to do what Stephen outlines as a strategic alliance please feel free to contact me. We can also help with the initial approach and sale, just in case you are terrified of making a cold call ;)

Thanks again Stephen,

Daniel, actually the name is Barry but I am glad you feel the same way. I think this recession may push developers and domainers together and I think that will be a good thing.

Patricia, welcome and glad you found something useful. As a foreigner arriving in America, I found I had to make contacts and build a network here. I was able to use that later to help my domain marketing.
