Cancer is expected to overtake heart disease as the leading cause of death worldwide in 2010. Information and services on cancer and associated topics should also increase in demand. There should be domaining opportunities here that also help educate people especially about prevention and is a way domainers and developers can give back to society.
The World Cancer Report was published yesterday by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. While cancer rates are falling in the U.S. (cancer death rates for both sexes combined declined about 1.8% per year from 2002 through 2005), worldwide cancer rates are expected to rise.
An annual rise of 1 percent in cases and deaths is expected — with even larger increases in China, Russia and India. That means new cancer cases will likely mushroom to 27 million annually by 2030, with deaths hitting 17 million.
“Cancer is responsible for 1 in 8 deaths worldwide. In fact, cancer causes more deaths than AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined,” said Otis W. Brawley, MD, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society (ACS).
The majority of the websites are geared to the US and western Europe but now the majority of smokers are in countries like India and China with huge populations so demand for cancer information and services will rapidly rise in these countries. In countries like Africa, pain medications and hospice care are in short supply in some regions.
The types of cancer that occur in less well developed countries can differ from those in the 1st world countries and these types of cancer are under served. Some like liver cancer are due to chronic infections that are much less common in developed countries.
Domains and websites, whether for profit or non-profit, that focus on this problem should see an increase in interest over the next decade and providing websites with appropriate information is a productive way to give back. Proper education especially about preventative measures is a powerful weapon in the fight against cancer.
Many organizations are only too glad to have help spreading the word and can be approached to provide content for your related websites. Coming up to the Christmas holiday, it is always worth thinking about how to give back as a domainer or website developer.
A simpler way to give back is mentioned in the Inside Adsense Blog where you can donate some Adsense earnings to help victims in China and Myanmar (Burma).
