WordPress, a free blogging platform, can be used to develop everything from simple to complex websites without you knowing a thing about HTML. WordPress also comes in a multiuser flavor called WordPress MU and this can be adapted to host a network of websites. With the very recent release of WordPress 2.7, I have updated my e-book “WordPress and WordPress MU for websites” which shows you how to create websites using these free software packages.
What is WordPress?
WordPress is a content management system which allows you to create and manage blogs and websites without having to know HTML, PHP etc. It has a simple menu driven system with a content editor that looks like a word processor package. This allows even experienced developers to focus on the content rather than on the mechanics of the website. Most large publishers use content management systems e.g. MTV, BBC
WordPress 2.7
WordPress 2.7 is a release that is a welcome relief to me. The administration interface had become more cumbersome and less logical. This upgrade is focused on providing a better author interface and has been well thought out.
Much of the dashboard is modular and can be rearranged by you to suit your taste. There are now shortcuts to many of the most common tasks and all of the tasks are available in the left hand menu.
WordPress MU
WordPress MU was designed to host a network of blogs each of which could be independently customized. The owner could control what options were available on each blog and so retain some control over the appearance of the network. As it turns out, with some modifications this software can run a network of websites and each website can use a different theme to have a different look and it can also have its own plugins so it has its own customized functionality.
The 2.7 release has not yet been made public but I expect it soon. As soon as that becomes available, I will revise the e-book and make that available.
Can WordPress handle high traffic and complex websites?
WordPress can handle high traffic and there is a great plugin that helps minimize database calls called SuperCache. With this plugin active, WordPress can act very like a static html website. I use that plugin for this blog.
Complex websites usually means that there are multiple functions required. Many plugins are available for WordPress and so many of these tasks can be handled.
