Ismael,

Agree that more than one hyphen in a domain name seems spammy because they are used to string keywords together and content is often scraped with ads.
You often lose traffic to the non-hyphenated version also.
There are legitimate uses but it should be approached carefully.

From an inhouse seo's perspective(it's me), I would say 1 to 2 hyphens is ok just to disambiguate the domain name like pen-island.com but more than that, it's spammy looking.

If you'll invest in such domain names, then prepare to just pay the regfees but if I where you, you will just let it drop.

Just my two cents :)

"Here is a good domain ??
iReport.com Sold for $750,000 Pipe Dream"

Todd,

There is a world of difference between the
iReport .com sale and the domains I listed above.

There is a world of difference between Rick
and that eBay seller.

The difference is Rick did not put his domain
on eBay for $750,000 hoping someone will bite.

CNN came to him. He didn't go to them.

Seller advantage!

Plus iReport .com is a much better domain than
those I listed above IMHO.

I wouldn't have paid $750,000 for it though and
in all likelihood neither would you.

I don't know Rick personally but from what I
can gather he is not in a position where he
has to sell any of his domains.

I'll bet if you or I had owned iReport .com,
CNN would have paid a whole lot less than
$750,000.

Am I wrong?

The situation with IReport.com is that CNN took an interest as a way to brand a site where user generated stories meets CNN reporter generated stories. The seller was also Rick Schwartz which carries some weight.I agree with Rick that this was not another "I" domain because it fitted perfectly with the intended use and was memorable.

Can we anticipate this? Not really but with a diversity of high quality domains, it is bound to happen and here is where Rick benefits.

The more serious me.

Barry,

Would this be a Domainer stereotype?

The Pipe Dreamer

You know the one with a ridiculous domain name
and wants to sell it for $1,200,000 and thinks
he's offering you a bargain.

"It’s a domain name, Jim, but not as we know it,

there’s Hyphens on the starboard bow, starboard
bow, Jim.

Bridge to engine room, hyphen-factor-9."

Barry,

Please go back to rapping. :-)
