Getting domain names from press releases

by Barry on January 28, 2009

Companies issue press releases every day and these are the products they are going to stand behind and promote. Not only that but they are going to advertise these products. So is the category killer generic domain name still available?

Press releases

The great thing about press releases is that the company that issues them wants you to use them. In the past I have described how to use them to generate content for your web site.

One of my favorite places to look at press releases is PRWeb.com. You can sort the press releases by industry and then sort through them. If it is a large list, I will cut and paste them into Excel and then start separating them into columns with each column having press releases that are related to each other.

Look for the generic name

Try to come up with generic names for each column and then go through your usual checklist for a domain. At a minimum it should contain:

  • whether the domain available
  • search frequency
  • competition
  • ad inventory

You can add a lot more to this list. If you are going to develop, make sure you know what your potential visitors are looking for.

Insure your collectibles

I picked a quick example to illustrate the point. Just to be clear, I am not recommending you invest in this area because I haven’t researched it thoroughly.

The press release headline looks like this:

Comics and Insurance – An Unlikely Combination?
Just read the headlines in local news and popular comics’ websites. From Hoboken, NJ to Seattle, Washington, comic collectors and dealers alike are discovering the need to protect their comic book collections with insurance specifically designed with their needs in mind. 01/28/2009

An insurance company has teamed up with a comic book collectors website to insure valuable collections.

Insurance ads can pay out quite well. Could a more generic version of this be worthwhile like insurance for collections or insurance for collectibles? What other niches besides comic books are underserved?

Target your buyer

Let’s say we did obtain a domain name to describe comic book collection insurance. You can try targeting comic book website owners who may be the most likely customers to recognize the value of the domain.

Alternatively you could develop and take ads out on comic book collector web sites or even come to a co-promotion arrangement with one of those web sites.

The key advantages

The key advantages of using press releases as inspiration for domain names are:

  • market already present
  • ad inventory should be reasonable
  • companies are already promoting specific products in this area
  • potential buyer could be the company that issued the press release

Of course always do your homework before investing.
