Buying domain names related to products or product classes
Anticipating which products will be successful can give you opportunities to invest in domain names. This does not mean buying names that are trademarked or copyrighted. Instead look for generic names that describe the product or product class.
Digital cameras is an example of a product class that has really taken off. Product associated names have the advantage that they are easily monetized. You can sell the product yourself, review the products or advertise the products or any combination of these. You can also sell off the domain name as interest grows in the product area.
Products have a lifetime or life cycle which can be quite short in some cases. Market timing will be important in those cases. Product classes generally have a longer life cycle but can be superseded by a new product classes e.g. vinyl records to CDs.
Developing products that may become popular. Prior examples include the ipod, iphone, digital cameras and hybrid cars.
You should not use trademarks or copyrighted names but you can use generic names such as “digital cameras”.
