I use moniker.com to check domain names. I like the ability to check multiple domain names at once. Look for the link to check a list of names.
Use the U.S. patent office to find generic names for technologies. Predict which technologies described in the patents will be successful and cash in on this success by obtaining the matching domain names.

Hostgator is a host I highly recommend having tried so many. The ability to host unlimited domains is a major advantage. Fantastico allows you to easily add CMS or other scripts which is ideal if you are running minisites or testing out various domains. It is not unusual for this tool to be overwhelmed and time out. Again this provides search volume results for your keyword and related searches.
