Here is the process I use. WordPress MU is a less well known version of WordPress that can be adapted to support many websites from one codebase. This means you only have one copy of software to update and customize for all your websites and yet each website can be completely customized using the themes and plugins you are familiar with in WordPress.
WordPress MU was designed to host multiple blogs and WordPress.com as well as many other multiple blog sites run on WordPress MU. It is much more powerful but requires a little more knowledge to set up and run. The secret is that it can be adapted to support multiple websites, instead of multiple blogs.
So I have put together a short e-book that walks you through setting up the database, installing the software and adapting it to support websites instead of blogs.
